leadership philosophy
Leadership is expression through passion, values, and authenticity to lead yourself and others to a far reaching goal. Leadership can be done by a variety of individuals and it is expected that an individual's degree of leadership will change over time.
Leadership if often performed by those individuals with a strong drive and passion. Individuals that demonstrate strong leadership qualities often have excellent communication, organizational, and relationship skills. They are the individuals that are able to relate to their peers and bring out others' leadership skills by appropriately expressing theirs. Leadership is also done by those that are able to work though conflict with collaboration. Leaders have an internal drive to make a difference in the world and express leadership to selflessly help others. Most importantly, leaders are not limited to those with senior positions. Instead, leaders are a diverse group of individuals that honestly and humbly demonstrate leadership qualities.
I have learned throughout my leadership journey that both my leadership skills and my leadership philosophy are constantly developing and changing with different experiences. As I mention on My Leadership Journey page, the variety of leadership workshops and mentor sessions that I have attended have changed my leadership philosophy. I used to think that only the "top" people within a community or team could demonstrate leadership. But as I soon found myself as one of the newest team members, I learned that I could still be a leader and not be the head of the team. On our research team, each team member demonstrated different leadership skills. While some expressed strong educational and academic leadership qualities, I expressed more organizational and communicative skills. I think that this experience is one that has shown me everyone demonstrates leadership in different degrees.
I am interested and excited to see where my leadership takes me in the future. I hope to strengthen and utilize it even more while in graduate school and in my career.
